How I ended up in Hollywood

... and made a website into an online movie theater.

My name is Mike

I live near Hollywood, California, the entertainment and movie capital of the world.

I see movie stars in the corner coffee shop, having lunch, and yes - sitting next to me at a local movie theater.

And I come across movies shooting on location, even right across the street from where I live. My wife works in movies and television as a background actress. You've probably seen her on your favorite TV show.

But I didn't always live near Hollywood. In fact, I grew up far, far away from Hollywood - that is if you consider Anchorage, Alaska far away. Yes, I thought you would.

The Alaska Connection

I love Alaska and I'll tell you what I tell everyone else - if at all possible, visit Alaska sometime in your life. You'll be glad you did.

Maybe my love for movies got started because of the long winter nights in Alaska or was it those wonderful Saturday afternoon movie matinees - or both.

From the moment I walk up to the ticket booth, to that wonderful smell of movie theater popcorn when I first enter the lobby. Oh the memories.

Then walking through the door that opens into the theater auditorium - and there it is - that big beautiful screen where all the movie magic takes place.

Moments later, sitting there, snacks in hand, waiting for the lights to dim and the screen to come alive, transporting me with pictures, characters and a story.

Movies are the most powerful communication tools in the world. A movie can transport you home, to a far off place, or to a world that only exists on the screen.

A good movie can make us smile, laugh, feel sad or cry.

Through movies we're entertained, relaxed, and even educated - and all in the short time between the opening credits and the end of the picture.

Working In Television And Movies

While still in high school in Anchorage, Alaska I became interested in a career in the television and motion picture industry.

As you can imagine

Alaska is one of the most beautiful places on earth, but it's remote location keeps it from being used frequent for movie and television production.

So while I was still in high school I decided the only way for me to get my start was in local television. I auditioned for an internship at the local CBS television network affiliate and a week later I got a call saying "can you start next week?" - I was on my way.

A couple of years after I graduated from high school, I was still working in television and loving every minute of it.

Then I auditioned as the host of a live teen dance program called "The Varsity Show" and for the next 3 years I was the "Dick Clark" of Alaska. During that time I met the fine lady that would become my wife (and a movie and television background actress).

My love of movies took me from just watching movies to being involved in film production. My wife and I moved from Alaska to Southern California where I worked at GMT Studios in Culver City not far from Sony Pictures Studio the former home of movie studio giant MGM.

Some years later, I became a Hollywood screenwriter. I wrote and sold 5 scripts that to date, have not been produced.

Then it happened

"The Long Ride Home" a western starring country singer Randy Travis, Academy Award winner Ernest Borgnine and well known actress Stella Stevens was produced. The movie is based on a short script I wrote although I didn't receive screen credit.

From screenplays to the Internet

I decided to turn my love for movies and my background in television and motion picture production into a website.

My goal was simple - create a friendly, easy to use website where visitors could watch movies, favorite TV episodes, videos and documentaries.

Great idea

My wife encouraged me by saying:

"Now you'll have a place to put all the movie trivia you know to good use."

In my case, I already knew how to build a friendly, easy to use website - because I already had a successful website online.

Some years ago I decided to put together a website that gave parents ideas and information to help them put together a birthday party their child would happily remember for years to come.

But I didn't know anything about the Internet - and the only thing I had been using my computer for was writing screenplays.

So I surfed all over the Internet looking for information about building a website and hosting and everything else that goes along with being online. It was exhausting and frustrating.

I ended up going with what seemed like a good host - but after many long, hard hours put into building a "half way decent website", I discovered that "half way decent" wasn't nearly enough to make it a successful website.

One frustrating day when I was still looking for a new website host, I found a company called Site Build It.
