Production Notes

After filming "The Young Racers" in Ireland with star Patrick Magee, producer Roger Corman offered the movies sound technician, Francis Ford Coppola the opportunity to write and direct his first movie using $22,000 dollars left over from The Young Racers" and the films star Patrick Magee.

With a little help, Coppola wrote the screenplay in 3 days, then, without telling Corman, raised an additional $20,000 to make the movie.

Although Coppola was given the freedom to write and direct the movie, Corman was unhappy with the finished movie. Jack Hill was then hired by Corman to shoot additional footage and to include a prologue to make the movie longer.

The prologue included:

"You must pass the "D-13" test to prepare you for the horrifying experience of Dementia 13. If you fail the test - you will be asked to leave the theater!"
