Anthony Veiller's screenplay follows Mr. Wilson, an FBI Agent played by Edward G. Robinson as he tries to find Franz Kindler, a mastermind behind the Holocaust.


Production Notes

Following World War II, "The Stranger" was the first movie to use actually footage from Concentration Camps.

Actress Agnes Moorehead (Endora on TV's "Bewitched") was Orson Welles choice to play the FBI role, but the studio wanted Edward G. Robinson.

The Studio cut and eventually lost about 30 minutes of the movie.

United Artists Studios in Hollywood was where they built the huge exterior sets for the New England town, including the church and 124 foot clock tower sets.
