Producer Walter Wanger and the movie's director Don Siegel originally wanted to shoot Invasion of the Body Snatchers in Mill Valley, just north of San Francisco because that was the location described in Jack Finney's novel.

But the movie's production budget dictated a location closer to Hollywood - so the community of Sierra Madre was used as the movie's fictional town of Santa Mira.
